Standing Solo: The Beatles for Electric Bass
Growing up, my musical tastes were totally influenced by my older brother and cousin. They were mostly into hard rock and heavy metal so that is what I listened to. Like most kids, I wasn’t overly interested in what my parents listened to.
When I started playing bass my tastes began to change. I searched for music in which the bass had a more prominent role. I started listening to Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, Jaco Pastorius, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Marcus Miller, and Herbie Hancock. They all covered Beatles songs. Growing up in the 80s, I knew Paul McCartney was a big deal but didn’t know much about him, although I had read that he was a great bass player.
In 1995, I had just started my first part time job and was spending my paycheques at HMV. One day I bought “Past Masters Vol. 1” to see what all the fuss was about. It was love at first listen. Within a month or so, I had purchased every album. My personal "Beatlemania" was in full swing. None of my family members or friends were really into The Beatles. As ridiculous as it sounds, I felt like they were mine. They represented a sort of musical independence for me. I imagine that kids growing up in the 60s felt the same way. The music sounded fresh and exciting to me, and after all these years it still does!
Over the years, I have arranged several Beatles songs for solo bass guitar. They were always fun and challenging to cover. Once I had seven or eight completed, I had the idea to record an album. I then had the idea of having the project mastered at Abbey Road Studios. (The Red Arrow and Slingshot were both mastered there.) And then came the most ridiculous idea. Why not record the whole album in London at Abbey Road Studios?
Ultimately, that is the goal for "Standing Solo." The EP is designed to HELP! make that happen! This will be the final recording project for Moped Records, so why not go out with a bang? Please consider purchasing a CD and help make this album a reality!
Also, keep an eye out for an Indiegogo campaign in the coming months.
